The midterm event of the COWEB project took place from July 2 to 6, 2024, at Unisalento, hosted by the Department of Engineering for Innovation. Over 35 participants from partner institutions gathered to review the progress of the Collaborative Virtual Learning (CVL) project, share experiences, and discuss new trends in virtual learning.
This event focused on reviewing virtual learning initiatives across partner institutions, particularly local projects at Western Balkan universities. It also served as a key moment to map out future goals, with a robust agenda prepared by the UNISALENTO team that included presentations, case studies, and workshops spanning three days.
Day One: Exploring the Impact of Digital Technologies on Education
The first day of the event focused on how digital technologies are reshaping education. Five guest speakers from the EU presented recent advancements in virtual learning, highlighting the progress of past projects and exploring upcoming developments. The sessions explored the role of Virtual Collaborative Learning (VCL) in fostering internationalization and improving learning outcomes.
Prof. Gianluca Elia from Unisalento shared the university’s experience with VCL projects, showcasing how technology has driven innovation in student learning. Other experts like Lucio De Paolis discussed the impact of Extended Reality (XR) on education, while Antonella Longo introduced the concept of EduVerse and AI to enhance learning outcomes. Throughout the day, participants engaged in dynamic discussions, reflecting on the transformative potential of these emerging technologies.
Day Two: Showcasing Local Virtual Learning Initiatives
Day two of the workshop allowed each Western Balkan Higher Education Institution (WB HEI) to present their local virtual learning initiatives. These projects, which included interdisciplinary collaborations and practical applications, were highlighted as milestones in the development of virtual education in the region.
Notable VCL initiatives were presented by Epoka University, International Burch University, and the European University of Tirana. Each of these universities demonstrated unique applications of VCL, from exploring global issues like cryptocurrency and Brexit, to developing smart city solutions and advancing software development. The presentations showcased the diversity and potential of virtual learning within the region, encouraging other institutions to adopt similar strategies.
Day Three: AI Tools and Collaborative Planning for the Future
The final day of the event centered on the use of AI tools in enhancing virtual learning. A hands-on workshop introduced participants to the potential of AI in generating virtual learning reports and analyzing data. The workshop emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technologies into education to improve both learning outcomes and institutional efficiency.
The day concluded with a focused discussion session on the future trajectory of the COWEB project. Participants strategized next steps, ensuring that the project remains aligned with cutting-edge trends and continues to foster innovation in virtual learning.
Conclusion: Paving the Way for Virtual Learning Advancements
The midterm event of the COWEB project underscored the dedication of all stakeholders involved to revolutionize education through virtual collaborative learning. The discussions and workshops highlighted the transformative power of digital technologies, AI, and virtual learning initiatives across Western Balkan universities. With a shared commitment to innovation, the project is well-positioned to continue making a significant impact on the future of education.
